When I first see you, I know winter is near.
Your gray head and white belly make it clear –
The brave Juncos are finally here.
As I watch you hop on the ground,
I hear your adorable cheeping sound.
For months, I know you’ll be around.
Some people want color more bright,
But I see beauty in gray and white.
When the days are drab, you bring light.
You, the bird that sparked it all
As such a round, fluffy gray ball –
A big response for a bird so small.
Brynn H. is a 12-year-old from Kansas who likes reading, camping, and birding. A recent highlight for her has been birding in Australia, where she spotted one of her favorite birds, the Sulphur-crested Cockatoo. Her all-time favorite bird is the Dark-eyed Junco.
