Located in the lush Talamanca Mountains, San Gerardo de Dota is one of Costa Rica’s top birdwatching destinations. This tranquil highland valley, located about 85 kilometers from San José (Costa Rica’s Capital), is known for its cloud forests, pristine rivers, and abundant birdlife. It is a prime location for spotting the elusive Resplendent Quetzal, a bucket-list species for many birders.
While birding is excellent year-round, the best time to visit San Gerardo de Dota is during the dry season from December to April. However, the Resplendent Quetzal’s breeding season, from February to May, offers the best chances to see this magnificent bird displaying its courtship behavior.
There are many top birding locations you can’t miss while you are visiting San Gerardo de Dota. Los Quetzales National Park, located 97 kilometers from San Isidro de El General, is a protected cloud forest area teeming with highland bird species. Savegre River Valley is a hotspot for hummingbirds, tanagers, and flycatchers. Additionally, many eco-lodges in the area, such as Savegre Hotel and Trogon Lodge, have well-maintained trails ideal for bird photography.
San Gerardo de Dota is home to a variety of highland endemics and sought-after species, including Resplendent Quetzal. This species is the star attraction, best spotted near fruiting wild avocado trees. Some other species include the Collared Redstar, a charming warbler commonly found in cloud forest understories. The Volcano Hummingbird is a tiny, high-altitude hummingbird with iridescent plumage. Lastly, the Flame-throated Warbler is a striking bird with a bright orange throat.
San Gerardo de Dota is a delicate ecosystem that relies on responsible tourism. Hiring an expert local guide can help with bird spotting and bird calls, increasing your chances of rare sightings.
