Salesópolis – Brazil

About

Located in the Serra do Mar mountains of São Paulo state, the small town of Salesópolis is best known as the birthplace of the mighty Tietê River. This quiet, misty corner of southeastern Brazil serves as a gateway to one of the most biodiverse stretches of Atlantic Forest remaining. With its lush forests, rushing waterfalls, and open pastures, Salesópolis offers both breathtaking scenery and the chance to encounter some of Brazil’s most charming and endangered birds.

The main draw for birders is the Parque Estadual da Serra do Mar – Núcleo de Salesópolis, a protected reserve that covers nearly 35,000 hectares of montane and lowland Atlantic Forest. Entering the park is a special experience. The air is cool and damp, often filled with drifting fog that carries the musical whistles of solitaires, the sharp calls of manakins, and the distant drumming of woodpeckers.

For birders chasing endemics, the park doesn’t disappoint. The Black-fronted Piping-Guan, once teetering on the brink of extinction, still patrols the canopy here. Birders with patience and luck may spot the Red-ruffed Fruitcrow, a bold splash of crimson against the green forest. Hummingbirds are plentiful as well, darting between blossoms of bromeliads and orchids. Species like the Sapphire-spangled Emerald and Violet-capped Woodnymph are common companions on the trails.

Salesópolis is also a wonderful place to appreciate the quieter forest species. The mournful whistles of the White-throated Woodcreeper echo from mossy trunks, while mixed flocks of tanagers and antwrens move through the area in a blur of motion. In clearings, you might encounter the Rufous-capped Antthrush hopping along the leaf litter or hear the ringing song of the Scaled Antbird.

Beyond the reserve, the surrounding countryside provides a change of pace. Open grasslands and rural roads are home to seriemas, southern lapwings, and the striking Whistling Heron. The mix of habitats makes it easy to spend days here, alternating between forest birding and more open landscapes, always with new surprises day to day.

What makes Salesópolis especially appealing is its accessibility. Just a few hours from the bustling city of São Paulo, it feels worlds away but remains easy to reach for a weekend or longer stay. The town itself is small and welcoming, with simple pousadas (inns), hearty food, and a pace of life that invites you to slow down. Many visitors find themselves rising before dawn, walking forest trails with the first light, and then visiting waterfalls, like the Cachoeira dos Freires, where toucans sometimes fly across the misty gorge in the late afternoon.

For birders seeking the magic of the Atlantic Forest without the crowds of more famous birding destinations, Salesópolis is a gem waiting to be explored. It’s a place where conservation meets culture, where you can listen to the forest breathe, and where each turn of the trail might reveal a bird you’ve never seen before.
