Manuel Antonio National Park and The Highlands – Costa Rica
About
Costa Rica is a bird photographer’s paradise, and two of the most rewarding regions for birding enthusiasts are the coastal rainforests of Manuel Antonio and the lush highlands of the central mountains. Each offers distinct ecosystems teeming with a rich diversity of bird species, making for an unforgettable birding adventure.
Manuel Antonio National Park and its surrounding areas provide an incredible mix of coastal, lowland rainforest, and mangrove habitats. Birders here can enjoy a spectacular variety of species, many of which are endemic to the region.
The dry season, from December to April, offers optimal birding conditions with clearer trails and increased bird activity. However, even the green season (May to November) can provide excellent opportunities, as birds are more vocal and active. Another birding destination in the Manuel Antonio National Park area is Playa Biesanz. A quieter location near the coast, ideal for spotting seabirds and forest-dwelling species alike. Another favorite area is Damas Island Mangroves. This area is excellent for spotting herons, kingfishers, and the striking Mangrove Hummingbird.
A few notable birds to look for while birding in Manual Antonio National Park are:
– Fiery-billed Aracari – A colorful toucan relative, often seen in small groups.
– Rufous-tailed Hummingbird – One of the most common hummingbirds in the area.
– Chestnut-backed Antbird – Found in the undergrowth, following army ant swarms.
– Black-hooded Antshrike – A common species in secondary growth and forest edges.
The highlands of Costa Rica, including areas like Monteverde, Savegre, and Poás Volcano, offer a completely different birding experience, with cooler temperatures and cloud forests rich in biodiversity. Birdwatching is excellent year-round in the highlands, though the months of December to April provide clearer skies and better visibility. Migratory birds are also present during this time. A Top birding hotspot is the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve, it’s one of the most famous birding destinations, home to the Resplendent Quetzal.
Both Manuel Antonio and the highlands are fragile ecosystems that require responsible ecotourism. Stick to designated trails, minimize noise, and avoid feeding or disturbing wildlife to ensure the continued preservation of these habitats.
Whether you’re exploring the lush coastal rainforests of Manuel Antonio or the mystical cloud forests of the highlands, Costa Rica offers an unparalleled birding experience. From dazzling hummingbirds to the legendary Resplendent Quetzal, every outing is a chance to witness some of the world’s most extraordinary avian wonders.
