Cancún is a popular Mexican city on the Yucatan Peninsula, in Quintana Roo, known for its beautiful beaches, clear waters, and culture. It is a significant tourist destination and one of the biggest resort areas in Mexico. Though, Cancún is also renowned for its tropical plants and wildlife. The Yucatan Peninsula offers some of the best bird watching and diving sites where you can see a great variety of bird species and marine life. Pink Flamingos, Keel-billed toucans, and Collared Aracari’s are aplenty within the Yucatan Peninsula, though they still get a lot of other visitors like the Scarlet Tanager, Green Jay, hummingbirds, and woodpeckers. The Yucatan Peninsula is home to many migratory and endemic species. While diving, you will find a variety of marine life like rays, turtles, manatees, sailfish, seahorses, and butterflyfish. Bird watching is getting more and more popular every year in Cancún. There are many local areas that offer great one-day birding trips from Cancún like Puerto Morelos, Cozumel Island, Akumal, and Tulum. Puerto Morelos has many cenotes where motmot birds are most common and is only 30 minutes from Cancún. Endemic species can be spotted on Cozumel Island and the Mayan jungle offers a unique birding experience within the island. The Reserva de la Biosfera Sian Ka’an in Tulum is the second biggest biosphere reserve in Mexico and is protected under the UNESCO program. There are 326 identified species of birds in all the different ecosystems of the Sian Ka’an Biosphere. It is only a 3-hour drive from Cancún. Owen traveled to Cancún in 2005, 2006, and 2019.
