Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge – Rwanda

About

Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge is made up of several luxury cottages and is located in Ruhengeri, Rwanda. It is hidden in the foothills of the Virungas – a legendary chain of 15,000-foot volcanoes that stretches through Rwanda, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The lodge is within walking distance to Volcanoes National Park for seeing the extraordinary Mountain Gorilla. About half of the world’s population of Mountain Gorillas is here in this area. Though the lodge is famous for this, it is truly a gem for bird watching and bird photography, and seeing the most colorful birds. The property is home to Buhanga Sacred Forest – which is known for its beautiful African birds being very active in the morning and late afternoon. About 40 species of birds can be seen here, some of which are endemic to the area. Some of Sabyinyo Lodge’s staff is generally very knowledgeable about birds, and they are happy to escort visitors to view the local birds, which usually do not thrive in surrounding areas, but thrive at the lodge. You can see some fantastic colorful birds here, like the Variable Sunbird, Northern Double-collared Sunbird, and Village Weaver. This lodge was built and operated by Governors’ Camp Collection with the African Wildlife Foundation and the International Gorilla Conservation Program and established in 2008. Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge is Rwanda’s first community-owned lodge. The amazing thing about it is that it gives back to the area. It is owned by a community trust called SACOLA, which uses the funds gained from the lodge to help the communities surrounding the area. Owen traveled to this lodge in February 2019.
