Sani Lodge is located in Quito, Ecuador right in the middle of the primary rainforest. This is the only eco-lodge in Ecuador that is 100% owned and operated by indigenous people – the Kichwa. It was named one of 100 of the best sustainable destinations in 2019 from the Green Destination Committee. This prestigious award focuses on attention to wildlife, natural habitats, and caring for indigenous communities. Sani Lodge is also in partnership with several other conservation nonprofit organizations, with the goal of protecting the rainforest. In addition to this, all profits go towards bettering the community so you know your trip expenses are going to a great cause. While there is an amazing wildlife experience on the premises, there is also a great cultural experience to be had, engaging with the indigenous people. One of the most amazing attractions of the lodge is the 100-foot observation tower in a giant Ceibo tree. The tower has been known to be a great spot to see some rare animals and birds while bird watching. Over 565 birds have been seen from the tower! The lodge boasts a list of at least 550 birds common to the area, one of the largest lists worldwide. Many visitors report seeing at least 120 different species in four days on bird watching tours with the help of on-site ornithological guides. A large number of birds can be seen along the Napo River and all over the area during your stay, including the Many-banded Aracari, Hoatzin, Ladder-tailed Nightjar, Tawny-bellied Screech Owl, Rufescent Tiger-Heron, and the Great Potoo.
